The Wailing Wall/Bar mitzvas
The Western "Wailing" Wall (the remaining portion of Herod's temple at the time of Jesus). Friday night marks the beginning of shabbat, so there is an especially large crowd of Jews come to pray at the wall. The groups of soldiers and youth dancing/singing in circles was especially fun to see.

Qumran Caves and Masada
Qumran caves (where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found)
Looking down on the cable cars we took up to Masada. Masada is a very tall plateau on which Herod built a fortress. When the Jewish rebels fled Jerusalem in the first century AD, they came here, but they were pursued... It's a good story. Look it up.

Bethlehem
Inside the Church of the Nativity
The traditional site for the birth of Jesus. Here pilgrims bow down and reach their hand into the hole in the ground, so as to touch the rock on which Jesus was born.
Golgotha and the Garden Tomb
One of the two traditional sites where Jesus is thought to have been crucified. (On the skull-shaped hill, not in the bus parking lot.)
One potential site for the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea, where Jesus' body was taken.

Some poetry from the LCC concert
"The first American music around,
Had notes shaped, diamond and round,
Keeping rhythm with an arm,
They sang songs with great charm,
For ne’er could a livelier hymn be found.”

A: "May I feel, said he
B: "I'll squeal, said she
A: just once, said he
B: it's fun, said she
A: May I touch, said he
B: How much, said she
A: A lot, said he
B: Why not, said she
A: Let’s go, said he
B: Not too far, said she
A: What’s too far, said he"
B: Where you are, said she!" [e.e. cummings, excerpt]

A: “If you would comfort me, sing me a lullaby:”
B: “Lower him gently, he sleeps forever. His bed is made where cedars hover,
for song the birds’ objective timpani and the cool earth to cover.”
A: “If you would win my heart, sing me a love song:”
C: “May this marriage be a sign of compassion, our everyday a day in paradise.”
A: “If you would mourn me and bring me to God, sing me a requiem, sing me to heaven.”
D: “Look, my small, my beautiful child, the icicle here, how it shimmers in the blue sun.
My small, my beautiful child, look once more.”

"Our night concludes with a future much brighter
As we sing the same message by two different songwriters
And through endless optimism, wonder and love,
Our last song portrays hope that rises above."

"An encore we give to you all,
We hope it will lift your morale,
We thank you so much,
And now a patriotic touch,
From the Livingston County Chorale."
